I swear, the first child is the trial child—except there’s no return policy. You just be out here, winging it, trying to figure out what works, what doesn’t, and hoping for the best.
I thought I was prepared. I read the books, watched the videos, and listened to the advice, but nothing truly prepares you for that first baby. The way my anxiety is set up? Yeah, I need control over all things, baby. I know they go through different phases, but I wanted to be ahead of every curveball.
Diaper Rashes? No, Thank You
One thing I was determined to avoid was diaper rash. I know, I know—most babies get them, and it’s not the end of the world. But in my house? We not doing that.
The key to preventing them is simple:
✔ Frequent diaper changes
✔ A good emollient
✔ Some type of powder to keep moisture in check
I knew the use of powder would help in terms of prevention and keeping the area dry. But traditional baby powder? Uhh, no.
I’m already on high alert about toxins, and my goal is to keep my babies away from as many as I can control.
The Baby Powder Switch
I grew up seeing Johnson & Johnson baby powder in every nursery, but once I started looking into the ingredients and potential risks? Yeah, that wasn’t happening.
Instead, I found the simplest, cleanest alternative:
✨ Arrowroot powder. ✨
That’s it. One ingredient. No unnecessary additives, no talc, no fragrance—just a light, natural powder that does the job without the worry.
It absorbs moisture, keeps my baby’s skin soft, and gives me peace of mind, which, let’s be real, is half the battle when you’re raising tiny humans.
Motherhood: Learning As You Go
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that parenting is a whole experiment. You try things, adjust, and figure out what works best for your baby. Some things you research ahead of time, and other things? You learn the hard way.
So, if you’re a first-time mama stressing about all the things, I get it. Just know that you don’t have to do it like everyone else. Find what aligns with your lifestyle and trust yourself—because at the end of the day, you got this.
Give Thanks,
Mary
