My Thoughts on Endometriosis

There are so many women out there dealing with endometriosis, many of those who haven't even been diagnosed yet.

I honestly feel like endometriosis is just now starting to be talked about.

The problem in this modern day is that endometriosis is rarely managed properly. Pain meds, hormone therapy, cuts, de-wombing, and more drugs. No. That’s not the answer because it will not work long term.

But what it can do is cause bigger issues later on. That has been proven, honestly.

So many women being treated with Western medicine are not receiving relief.

All of these medications, follow-ups, testing, and still no healing. Just quick silencing of the body alerts.

Think about when your job, your kids, your partner, and your friends are all blowing up your phone while it is on DND. You are going to have a lot of things to address when you open those notifications.

Think of your body in the same way.

If you keep silencing those alerts, you will have a lot of issues to answer later. The silencing of these alerts is only long enough until the next issue is discovered.

However, in real medicine, the goal should not be to silence the alarms. It should be to hone in on them.

In that way, we can use those alerts to point us in the direction for optimal healing, finally.

Not to mention, the alerts of endometriosis aren't so easy to ignore for too long anyway. The painful periods, pain during intimacy, excessive menstrual bleeding, and digestive upset will tear your [mind and] body up and make you miserable.

I know there are women out there who turn numb to these things, but if you ask me, those are some pretty intense situations that can greatly affect a woman's (and her family’s) quality of life.

So please don't become numb to it.

Keep those alerts on, and please work on answering them. Why? Because if we allow these things to continue and fester, then boom — other complications pop up:

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Infertility

  • Ovarian cysts and tumors

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Chronic hormonal imbalances

  • Mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression

  • Decreased quality of life

  • Potential increased risk of ovarian cancer

Oh, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse these complications come with mental and spiritual blockades that can further add to the chaos.

In endometriosis, tissues from the uterus thicken and attach to surrounding organs (fallopian tubes and ovaries) and may also travel to the bladder and lungs.

That is what you call the ebbs and flows of stagnation and inflammation.

This is how our minds can behave, too. When we have to experience conditions of stagnation and inflammation, this translates to the same type of energy in our minds.

As the plot of anxiety goes unaddressed, it can thicken and create inflammatory responses.

These responses can then attach to surrounding areas before they travel throughout the body, affecting other systems.

And let’s not forget about how it relates to spirituality. That same stagnation and inflammation may be the trigger and driving force for hopelessness, purposelessness, abandonment issues, anger, and depression.

These relations alone can add even more inflammation to the already overwhelmed functions

of the nervous, cardiorespiratory, endocrine, reproductive, and immune systems. When it comes to this condition, I frequently get the question:

Okay, so how do we fix it? Well, you don’t.

You can't fix endometriosis. You can’t buy a new endometrium and have it placed into your body — yet, at least.

But what you can do is focus on fixing the root issues that led up to the condition in the first place.

When we think of what causes endometriosis, Western medicine alone does not give us straight enough answers. According to John Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic, the cause isn't clear. And those are two of the most prestigious healthcare facilities.

We doing all the diagnostics testing and researching, driving healthcare costs up just to shrug our shoulders later when it comes to really explaining and understanding where it could come from.

But we can get more clarity when you look at it from a functional medicine perspective.

Possible root causes of endometriosis include:

  • Retrograde menstruation

  • Inflammation causing uterus cells to spread to other organs through the bloodstream or lymph system.

  • Hormonal imbalance of high estrogen and low progesterone

  • Imbalanced immune system

  • Gut dysbiosis due to excess unfriendly bacteria

So, with those being the root causes of the condition, would you still accept the modern-day management of just hormones and surgery? Or would you rather focus on the necessary actions to heal?

Being to:

  • Balance the hormones

  • Stop the inflammation

  • Reduce the retrograde menstruation

  • Rebalance the immune system

  • and improve the gut bacteria

All of the roots can be addressed with lifestyle and nature’s medicine.

So if this condition may be addressed and, who knows, maybe even prevented with a focus on lifestyle and naturopathy, why do so many people still suffer from it?

Well, lifestyle and natural living is not always easy. Especially when you have to take time and observe yourself. With short attention spans and busy schedules, it may be challenging to hone in, unlearn, and relearn what you need to know to heal.

But challenging doesn't mean impossible. It just means that you have to listen to yourself and put in the action. Which is something that we have become unfamiliar with as we become more reliant on pills, doctors, and procedures. But internal healing makes it worth it. Reduced suffering makes it worth it. Longevity and quality of living make it worth it.

If you are unsure where to begin with managing your endometriosis at home, let’s keep it simple:

  • To balance the hormones, drink flaxseed water daily and eat indole-3-carbinol-rich foods like apples, cherries, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

  • To stop the inflammation, you may intake more omega-3 fats, reduce red meat and dairy and go gluten-free.

  • To reduce retrograde menstruation, consider avoiding pushing up anything into your vag while you are bleeding or cleansing. This can be dildos, penises, period cups, and even tampons.

  • To rebalance the immune system, you may reduce processed foods, fried food, refined sugar, and alcohol and drink 100% vegetable juice daily.

  • To increase the friendly flora levels in the large intestines, you may include organic cultured yogurt or kimchi in your diet.

After you consider those factors, then consider optimizing by supplementing with indole-3 carbinol, Vitamin E, EFA's, Iodine, B Complex, D Glucarate, Melatonin, and Vitamin C.

Better yet, you may even want to consider adding in-tune and balancing herbs like vitex berry, motherwort, dandelion root and leaf, and red raspberry leaf. These herbs don't just help balance hormones; they may also support pain relief and inflammation.

For my quick solution, gals, my favorite recommendation is to start this fire regimen 7 days before day 1 of the menstrual cycle:

  • 10mg of Melatonin nightly

  • 5 ml of Motherwort three times a day

  • Vitex and red raspberry leaf herbal blend 2x daily

And to reduce the pain that affects sleep, throw in some skullcap, passion flower, or valerian to really, you know, love yourself and calm your body.

I will also say, do the other things that will support getting that stagnation and inflammation from around your mind and your spirit too.

Pray, give thanks, connect with something higher than yourSelf, take a warm bath, practice acupressure, do more cardio, and do Pilates. Do all of the things that raise your mind, body, and spirit.

These are the real medicines to aim not just to help you correct endometriosis but for many hormonal imbalances in general.

So, if you want to improve your reproductive health, your fertility, and your quality of life

You gotta apply what feels in tune with your body. But most importantly, you gotta learn how to focus on your (higher)Self.

Happy Healing,

Mary
